Welcome to the Genesis Research web site

Genesis Research is the Technology Transfer and Industry Liaison Office of Memorial University. We operate as a division of Genesis Group Inc., the commercialization arm of the University. Genesis Group is a separately incorporated entity, wholly owned by Memorial and governed by a board of directors representing industry, academia, and government. Genesis supports faculty, students and staff engaged in research, development and outreach.

Our mandate is to support the research enterprise in:

  • Identifying and assessing new intellectual property (IP) developed by University researchers;
  • Facilitating the protection and further development of the new IP and related technologies; and,
  • Building relationships with industry aimed at commercializing University IP or providing access to the scientific and technical expertise resident at Memorial to support industry led initiatives.

Our goals are:

  1. To ensure that innovations created by University researchers are put into the hands of companies that can make them available to the public;

  2. To facilitate industry access to the wealth of expertise available at the University;

  3. To promote collaboration between University researchers and industry with a view to accelerating the pace of innovation in the province; and

  4. To provide economic benefit to Newfoundland and Labrador specifically, but also to Canada as a whole.
Memorial University researchers generate a range of new inventions and technologies that can be licensed to provincial, national or global partners to create new products and/or services or to improve existing ones. Genesis evaluates new technologies, manages IP protection, markets, negotiates and licenses technology to corporate partners. In addition Genesis is responsible for managing ongoing relationships with corporate partners and generating new ones.

Genesis also assists researchers with IP clauses in material transfer agreements (MTA), confidential disclosure agreements (CDA) and other agreements involving IP. Genesis can assist researchers and companies to ensure that adequate protection and controls are in place to meet legal and ethical requirements on all projects.

Our experienced commercialization officers work with researchers and ensure effective technology development and business interactions.  Our For Researchers page contains a variety of resources to assist researchers with IP development and protection. Those interested in learning more about IP and Technology Transfer vernacular and issues should visit our Technology Transfer FAQ page.

Genesis also helps companies to find and develop relationships with researchers to meet business requirements and to expand the researchers’ potential to participate in cutting edge projects. Small companies may be able to take advantage of programs at Memorial to fund small research inquiries. Larger companies can work with Genesis to tailor collaborative research agreements and other initiatives that meet their research and development needs. A number of funding initiatives may be available for joint industry – university projects with both large and small companies.

Our For Industry page is aimed at providing information to the private sector that will assist companies in accessing University expertise and technologies. To obtain information about University technologies that are available for license or for which we are seeking collaborative R&D partners, please click here. As a member of Springboard Atlantic, Genesis Research can also help connect companies to university and college-based research expertise throughout the region.
